About Distribute By Scale

What is Distribute By Scale?

Distribute By Scale moves your layers into 3D space based on their scale without changing their apparent scale or position. There are also options for scaling your layers sequentially to create different effects.


  1. In the .zip file you downloaded, you will see the 'Distribute By Scale.jsxbin' file. Copy this file.
  2. You need to paste it into the 'ScriptUI Panels' folder for your version of After Effects. (You must have After Effects CS3 or higher to use the Distribute By Scale script.)
    • Mac: ~/Applications/Adobe After Effects YOUR VERSION/Scripts/ScriptUI Panels
    • Windows: C:/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe After Effects YOUR VERSION/Support Files/Scripts/ScriptUI Panels
    ** If you do not have any ScriptUI Panels installed already, you should verify the spelling and placement of the 'ScriptUI Panels' folder. Capitalization and spacing is important. If the folder is not correctly named and in the correct location, the script will not be visible in the 'Window' menu.
  3. Now start up After Effects. You will see 'Distribute By Scale.jsxbin' at the bottom of the 'Window' menu. Select it to open the Distribute By Scale panel. If After Effects was already open, you must restart the program before it will be visible in the 'Window' menu.

Using Distribute By Scale

The core part of Distribute By Scale is the 'Distribute in Space' button and the 'Final Scale' amount.

First, you must select some layers. You can select any number of them, however they should be 2D layers to get results ad expected. If your layers have key-frames set on them, a new key-frame will be set for the new position.

Once you have layers selected, all you have to do is click the 'Distribute in Space'. Layers with a smaller scale are moved further in the distance, layers with a larger scale are moved closer. There will be no apparent change to the layers position on the screen, but all the layers have been set to the same scale and moved into 3D space in order to match their previous size.

The 'Final Scale' amount sets the final scale of the layers after 'Distribute in Space' has been run. All layers will shar the same X and Y scale.

The 'Scale Options' give you quick options for scaling a group of layers in sequence. These options will identify the largest and smallest to use as boundaries and then scale each selected layer based on the boundaries and the type of scale selected. You must have at least 3 layers selected for any of these options to work. The order of the scaling functions are based on the layers current scale. If there are layers of the same scale in the selection, it will revert to selection order..

  • Exponential - Creates an exponential relationship between the scales of the selected layers
  • Linear - Creates a linear relationship between the scales of the selected layers
  • Even Space - Scales each layer so that when 'Distribute in Space' is run, there will be a consistent distance in Z space between each layer
  • Random - Sets each layer to a random scale
